Day 2 with Mom: Titou Gorge

On Tuesday we left with Theo at about 8:15 and set out down the west coast of the island. We passed through Roseau and continued on to Titou Gorge. These are not my pictures - I had to find some online because I don't have a waterproof camera and we were in the water the entire time. In Creole, Titou Gorge means "small throat". I think a scene from Pirates of the Caribbean 2 may have been filmed here, but I'm not sure. To get to the waterfall, you must swim into a cave, which is really just 2 tall cliffs that are side by side, so you can see sunlight the entire time. Mom was not too sure about this, so she waited in the shallow water at the entrance, much like the person is in the picture above! The water was fuh-reezing! I felt like it was as cold as water could be without causing hypothermia! As soon as I hit the water it took my breath away and I just started doggy paddling as quickly as I could. I was too cold to remember how to swim, so I just kept kicking like crazy. My body felt like pins and needles and we all were screaming as we swam through the cave. My friend, Sarah, began to hyperventilate because it was so cold. She was trying to scale the cliff to get out of the water! After being in the water a few minutes, we got used to it. I wasn't even sure I could go in at all, but then some people over the age of 70 and under the age of 10 went in and I couldn't be put to shame by them! Of course they all had life jackets on and we didn't! As we swam through the tunnel we looked up and realized how gorgeous it was! I felt like it could have been a seen in Jungle Book or Peter Pan or any kind of Disney movie! It was definitely one of the coolest things I had ever done. They told us to swim to the left because the pressure from the waterfall would push us back...they were right! I practically pushed two of my friends underwater trying to fight the current and make it to the cave where we could catch our breath! One of us made it to the cave and we basically formed a human chain until all of us were safely in the cave. We then jumped off a rock into the water and swam like crazy to get back to the entrance. Going under the water was a mistake! I guess it was just too cold because after we went under 3 of us had ear-headaches for a long time! My ears were just throbbing! It was still definitely worth it and I plan to do it again...maybe on a very hot day this summer!
