3 Hours, 3 Showers

Funny how things can go from calm to crazy in 5 seconds! I took a shower before Ryan came home for lunch. When he left to go back to the library, I decided to get fancy and dry my hair (can't remember the last time I dried my hair). Once it was dry, I was so confused because the hair at the crown of my head was very sticky and gumpy. I had no idea what it could be, but I jumped back in the shower to wash my hair again. Got out, dried my hair...same thing. What in the world??? I called my mom and she said it sounded like I might have ringworm! She stayed calm and said you just need to go to the doctor and get a cream. Also, it is contagious if you have it. I got off the phone with her, called Ryan in the library (I was bawling by this point) and he started running home. He asked if I wanted to meet him at the doctor office, but I said I was too upset and needed to calm down first. I didn't know what a ringworm was, but I knew I didn't want one! I researched ringworm and saw that if you have it on your scalp you will suffer temporary hair loss. The crying turned in to sobs at this point. I then read that you need to wash your sheets, shower, basically everything you touch every day while the symptoms persist. Ha! How in the world can I wash my stuff everyday when I don't have a washing machine! I started googling and discovered a forum where 7 other women have had the same problem with their hair and all of them were using Garnier Fructis shampoo. So do I!!! When Ryan got home he carefully examined my scalp and said there was no redness or any other symptom of ringworm. I decided to take a third shower and use his Pert Plus. When I dried my hair this time it was so much better! Still there a little bit, but mostly gone! Apparently, it took a few days for their symptoms to go away completely. WHEW! Ryan did great and stayed very calm. He was saying "You've had a tough week. First, the dengue scare and now the ringworm scare.". I feel much better now! I know that getting ringworm may not be the end of the world, but when you are in Dominica, small problems are magnified by 100. Anyway, I don't have it and I am going shopping for new shampoo now!

Hey Ashley!
It sounds like you have provided some interesting cases for Ryan to practice is doctor skills on. :) Just so you know, I had ringworm once. I got it when I was training for the half marathon. It happened because of all the heat and dried sweat that got trapped in my shirt and sports bra...at least that's what the doctor told me. Who knows. Anyways, it was nothing a little Lotrimin couldn't clear up! I know that temporary hair loss would be way worse than my little itchy places, but just wanted to let you know that you're not alone! Hope your hair is back to looking beautiful soon!

Hi Ashley,
Terrie Robinson here. I just read an article in an "Islands" magazine. It says "people on Dominica live longer because of clean air, fresh fish, bush teas and low stress levels." Is this the same island you're on?? It goes on to say,"they tap into their unique energy through sunrise yoga on the beach, quiet meditation in an orchid garden and jungle hikes to the hot springs." It doesn't say anything about cows, bugs, snakes, on and off again electricity and water or heat and humidity. I think you need to set this magazine straight on Dominica. Write your own article and tell it like it REALLY is!! One good thing, you and Ryan might love longer because you're on Dominica! Just make sure you do "yoga on the beach at sunrise" and by all means "meditate in the orchid gardens." Now about those stress levels...........
Keep up the writing and the humor. I am enjoying every word you write. Take care. "Aunt" Terrie Robinson

Ashley you crack me up. I love to read every thing you write. I'm a little concerned about the shampoo you were using, because I use the same thing. I think I might change too. Sorry I have not posted any comments, but I have been very busy. I have a new grandbaby coming soon and I have to go deer hunting! I will try to do better. Juat please keep writing. Your pictures are beautiful.
Love, YaYa
